JURY AWARDS $3.4 MILLION in Products Liability Trial
[His] life has never been the same, said lawyer Edward Jazlowiecki, whose firm successfully represented Crutchfield in a civil suit against Stanley Works and Home Depot. On Thursday, a Superior Court jury in Hartford awarded Crutchfield $3.4 million after it found New Britain-based Stanley Works partly responsible for Crutchfield’s brain injury, which left him partially paralyzed. The jury found that Crutchfield was 55 percent liable for his injuries because he was firing the nail gun into metal rather than wood. The accident occurred while Crutchfield, 51, of Hartford was standing on a lift, 25 feet in the air, in the rafters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Ludlow. Crutchfield underwent six hours of surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester. He is permanently paralyzed on the left side of his body. The married father of four had worked as a carpenter for 20…

$2.9 Million Dollar Verdict Upheld in Bicycle Injury Lawsuit
Edward Jazlowiecki, Blonski’s lawyer, said his client had to have a rod placed in her neck. She is able to walk, he said, but “she’s lucky she didn’t die.” “She’s extremely happy” about the ruling, he said. The state Supreme Court has upheld a $2.9 million judgment against the Metropolitan District Commission, saying the regional water and sewer authority was not entitled to immunity from a claim filed by a bicyclist who was seriously injured on its property more than a decade ago. The ruling resulted from an appeal of a lawsuit filed by Maribeth Blonski, who was biking on a trail on MDC property in 2002 when she struck a gate that blocked a path in the Talcott Mountain Recreation Area in West Hartford. The MDC had decided to keep its gates closed at all times after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Blonski broke her neck. She…

California Jury Slams Monsanto With $2B Verdict
From National Public Radio: A California jury has awarded a couple more than $2 billion in a verdict against Monsanto, a subsidiary of Bayer. This is the third recent court decision involving claims that the company’s Roundup weed killer caused cancer. The jury in Alameda County, just east of San Francisco, ruled that the couple, Alva and Alberta Pilliod of Livermore, Calif., contracted non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma because of their use of the glyphosate-based herbicide. They were each awarded $1 billion in punitive damages and an additional $55 million in collective compensatory damages. Many legal experts believe the damages will be drastically reduced on appeal. The verdict represents the third such legal setback for the company in California since mid-2018. In March, a San Francisco jury awarded $80 million to a man who blamed his cancer on his extensive use of Roundup. In August 2018, another San Francisco jury awarded $289 million…
