Attorney Jazlowiecki Interviewed Regarding Latest New York Bus Crash
Federal data revealed that New York was among the top five states for bus crashes in 2024, with 909 incidents involving school, city, and charter buses. A tragic crash last month on the Thruway in Pembroke resulted in five deaths and dozens of injuries.
In 2024, 13 people died in bus crashes across New York. A crash in Chili resulted in one death and more than 20 injuries. Three weeks ago, a crash near Pembroke left five dead and 47 hospitalized.
Edward Jazlowiecki, a senior attorney at Jazlowiecki and Jazlowiecki, explained the rights of charter bus riders under New York state law.
“They can receive up to 50,000 dollars, no-fault coverage which covers your medical expenses and covers lost wages. Anyone that’s injured can apply,” said Jazlowiecki.
Riders must submit a claim to the insurance carrier within 30 to 45 days of the crash.
“You should get it in as soon as possible,” Jazlowiecki said.
Jazlowiecki noted that while forms are available online, gathering necessary information such as the insurance carrier and policy number can be challenging for the average person.
“If the no-fault benefits are not enough, there are instances where you can get more but you have to jump through hoops,” officials said. Riders may apply for additional benefits or take the claim to their insurance provider.
“If someone who has two broken legs or someone who has their child in the hospital 2 weeks after the crash hey they may want more than 50K,” said Marsha Augustin of News10NBC.
“$50K only covers their medical expenses. That has nothing to do with their pain and suffering with what they’ve gone through with the trauma. That they may have to get directly from the carrier,” Jazlowiecki said.
