Were You Exposed to Methyl Methacrylate in Garden Grove?

On May 21, 2026, a 34,000-gallon storage tank at the GKN Aerospace facility at 12122 Western Avenue in Garden Grove, California overheated and began releasing methyl methacrylate (MMA) — a highly volatile and flammable toxic chemical — into the surrounding air. Orange County Fire Authority officials warned publicly that the tank would "inevitably fail" and could explode, triggering emergency evacuation orders for more than 44,000 residents across Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster.

Thirteen school campuses were closed. Evacuation orders were issued, lifted, and then reissued as the situation escalated overnight. As of the date of this page, the situation remains active.

If you or your family were evacuated, exposed to MMA vapors, experienced health symptoms, or had your life disrupted by this incident, you may be entitled to significant compensation. Jazlowiecki & Jazlowiecki LLC has over 50 years of experience handling mass disaster and toxic exposure claims. Contact us today for a free, no-obligation case evaluation.

Incident

What Happened at the GKN Aerospace Facility?

The leak began around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, 2026, when an industrial storage tank containing methyl methacrylate overheated and began venting vapors. GKN Aerospace — a major British multinational aerospace manufacturer owned by Melrose Industries — uses MMA in the production of acrylic plastics for the aerospace industry.

Orange County Fire Authority crews responded but were unable to control the tank's valves. Officials from multiple agencies worked through the night with industrial experts to cool and stabilize the tank, with crews spraying water remotely due to explosion risk. USC Assistant Professor of Chemistry Elias Picazo described the danger: in an uncontrolled environment with a leak, any flash, spark, or temperature change can trigger a runaway chemical reaction.

The evacuation zone covered a 9-square-mile area of densely populated residential neighborhoods. GKN Aerospace apologized publicly and said it was "working tirelessly" to resolve the situation.

Chemical Exposure

What Is Methyl Methacrylate and Why Is It Dangerous?

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a colorless, highly flammable industrial chemical with a sharp, fruity odor. It is widely used in the manufacture of acrylic resins, plastics, Plexiglass, and other industrial materials. MMA has a boiling point just below that of water and generates its own heat, meaning it can self-accelerate toward a runaway reaction.

Because MMA vapor is heavier than air, it sinks and settles — meaning evacuation is critical to avoid prolonged low-level exposure even after an initial release.

Health Risks

Health Effects of Methyl Methacrylate Exposure

According to the U.S. EPA, CDC, and OSHA, MMA exposure can cause the following:

Acute (short-term) effects:

  • Eye, nose, and throat irritation
  • Chest tightness, difficulty breathing, coughing, and wheezing
  • Headaches, dizziness, and lightheadedness
  • Lethargy and sensation of heaviness in the arms and legs
  • Skin irritation and potential allergic sensitisation
  • At very high levels: severe respiratory distress and loss of consciousness

Chronic (long-term) effects:

  • Nervous system damage — symptoms may include "pins and needles", numbness, weakness, and impaired memory and concentration
  • Skin allergy — once developed, very low future exposures can trigger reactions
  • Potential fetal harm — MMA may damage the developing fetus
  • Possible liver and kidney effects with prolonged exposure

The health impact depends heavily on the level and duration of exposure. Doctors note that prolonged or repeated exposure — including slow, ongoing leaks — can lead to longer-term effects that may not be immediately apparent.

Eligibility

Who May Have a Legal Claim?

You may be entitled to compensation if you were affected by the Garden Grove GKN Aerospace MMA spill and experienced any of the following:

  • You were evacuated from your home or workplace and incurred costs or losses
  • You or a family member were exposed to MMA vapors and experienced health symptoms
  • You missed work or lost income due to evacuation orders or business closure
  • Your children's school was closed, requiring childcare arrangements or missed work
  • You suffered property damage as a result of the incident
  • You were a first responder or worker who had direct exposure
  • You have not yet shown symptoms but were in the evacuation zone — long-term effects may emerge over time

Important: even if you were evacuated but do not currently feel hurt, you may still have a claim. Evacuation disruption, property impact, lost wages, and business losses can all form part of a compensation claim. If someone has offered you a settlement or asked you to sign a release, do not sign anything before speaking with an attorney.

Compensation

What Compensation Can You Claim?

  • Medical expenses — past and future treatment for exposure-related illness
  • Lost wages and loss of earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Evacuation costs — hotel, transportation, meals, and temporary housing
  • Property damage
  • Business interruption losses
  • Future medical monitoring if long-term health effects are a concern
  • Wrongful death damages if a loved one died as a result of exposure

Founded in 1974 and based in Bristol, Connecticut, Founding partner Edward Jazlowiecki holds a degree in Chemical Engineering — giving the firm a rare technical understanding of toxic chemical exposure cases, including methyl methacrylate, that most personal injury attorneys simply do not have.

Our attorneys have represented victims in some of the most complex disasters in recent history:

  • $72 million recovered for victims of the Lac-Mégantic train disaster — one of the largest mass disaster settlements in history
  • $36 million settlement for victims of the Windsor Wildcats bus crash
  • $4.3 million in the Propecia global settlement — Zak Jazlowiecki filed the first U.S. lawsuit against Merck

Disclaimer: The $72M and $36M recoveries involved multiple parties and law firms.

Next Steps

Steps to Take If You Were Affected

  1. Seek medical attention immediately if you have any symptoms — even mild ones. Document all medical visits.
  2. Keep all records — evacuation notices, hotel receipts, medical bills, photographs, and any communication from GKN Aerospace or authorities.
  3. Do not sign anything — if a representative from GKN Aerospace, its insurers, or any other party contacts you about compensation, do not sign a release before speaking with an attorney.
  4. Document your symptoms — keep a written log of any health symptoms and their timing.
  5. Contact us immediately — time limits apply under California law. The sooner you act, the stronger your claim.
